Planning a family trip to Nha Trang and deciding between a beachfront hotel downtown and a resort in Cam Ranh? This guide covers the weather, airport transfers, four places to stay, a three-night itinerary and a budget for four. For a first visit, base yourself downtown and set aside one day for the northern sights and another for VinWonders.
Before you travel to Nha Trang
Search for flights to Cam Ranh International Airport (CXR) and check the local arrival and departure times on your ticket. If your flight lands at 1 a.m. on Tuesday and you want to go straight to your room, book Monday check-in and tell the hotel your flight number and expected arrival time. A Tuesday reservation generally gives you access to the room on Tuesday afternoon.
Check Vietnam’s entry requirements for each traveler’s passport, including any visa and passport validity requirements. Check children’s passport expiry dates separately. Save your onward ticket and first hotel confirmation where you can open them offline.
Vietnam uses the Vietnamese dong (VND). On menus, “50k” means VND 50,000. Keep small bills for markets, small restaurants and buses. If your phone supports eSIM, read the activation terms before installing a plan. Choose a SIM with voice service if you need a local number, and consider giving two family members mobile data if you expect to split up.
Google Maps is useful for directions, Grab for rides and Google Translate for menus. Show drivers the hotel name and map pin together. Electricity is generally 220 V at 50 Hz. Check your chargers and pack a travel adapter if needed. Before tipping at a hotel or restaurant, check whether the bill includes a service charge.
When to visit Nha Trang with children
January to August: drier months
February to April is a good starting point for families who want beach time and sightseeing. Monthly averages are around 25–28°C, with roughly 22–56 mm of rain. January averages about 24°C, and children can get chilly after swimming on windy days. Pack a dry change of clothes and a light layer.
May to August averages around 29°C. Visit outdoor sights such as Po Nagar in the morning, then plan lunch, a nap or a museum visit for the hottest part of the day. Return to the beach when the sun is lower. Pack breathable clothing, a wide-brimmed hat and a rash guard, and keep swimwear and spare clothes easy to reach.
September to December: rainy season
Typical monthly rainfall is about 169 mm in September, 342 mm in October, 432 mm in November and 228 mm in December. Temperatures still average roughly 25–28°C. Keep island plans flexible, especially in October and November. A light rain jacket leaves both hands free, and shoes with good grip help on wet pavement.
Check wind and rain forecasts the night before and boat or cable car notices in the morning. Rough seas can disrupt trips after the rain stops. Switch to the Oceanography Museum or a café during a brief shower, and stay at your accommodation if there is a typhoon or flood warning.
Getting from Cam Ranh Airport to Nha Trang
The central beachfront is roughly 30–35 km from the airport. Allow 40–55 minutes by car, plus immigration and baggage collection. Resorts on the northern coast can take longer. For four people with several bags, ask for a vehicle with enough luggage space.
- Airport taxi: One operator listed at international Terminal 2 quotes VND 300,000 per four-seat car to downtown. Show the hotel address and confirm airport fees, late-night surcharges and luggage capacity before leaving.
- GrabCar: Grab has published a reference range of VND 250,000–350,000 for the city-to-airport direction. Check the app separately for your airport-to-city fare. Follow the Terminal 2 pickup directions and match the car and license plate.
- Prebooked transfer: Useful for a late arrival or if you need a child seat. Share your flight number and ask about waiting time after delays, late-night charges and the total fare. Provide your child’s age, height and weight and ask the operator to confirm seat availability.
Getting around Nha Trang
Along Trần Phú, you can walk between the beach, cafés and dinner spots. Use a car for Po Nagar and Hòn Chồng in the north or the Oceanography Museum in the south. Budget VND 40,000–100,000 per short ride and check the actual fare in the app. Set the pickup pin at a hotel entrance or another spot where the driver can stop.
Local buses are worth considering when both stops are close. Check the fare and payment method for your route. For four travelers, compare the combined fare and the distance from the stop with the cost of one car.
Where to stay in Nha Trang with kids
Trần Phú Beach: easy for a first trip
The area around Trầm Hương Tower puts the beach, restaurants and cafés within easy reach. You can visit Po Nagar in the morning, return for a nap after lunch and go back to the waterfront in the evening. Check the route from the hotel entrance to the nearest crossing and dinner options, especially with a stroller. If you are sensitive to traffic noise, ask which way the room faces and what floor it is on.
Hotel to consider: InterContinental Nha Trang. At 32–34 Trần Phú, it’s convenient for beach walks, downtown meals and midday breaks. If a similarly named residence appears in your search, check the full name and address.
Phạm Văn Đồng: swimming and downtime on the north coast
Near Hòn Chồng, it’s easier to combine a seaside walk with a neighborhood meal. Farther north, you may spend more of your time eating and swimming at your resort. Visit Po Nagar and Hòn Chồng in the morning, then return for a rest and swim. Check for a few restaurants within walking distance if you plan to eat out.
Resort to consider: Amiana Resort Nha Trang. Its northern location suits families planning to spend time at the pool and by the sea. With younger children, ask about walking distances from the room, pool depth in the children’s area and conditions for entering the sea.
Hòn Tre Island: VinWonders and a resort stay
Stay on the island if you want a day at VinWonders and a quieter morning on the beach. Allow extra time if you plan several trips back to the mainland for Po Nagar, Đầm Market or dinner. For late arrivals, confirm the last island transfer, the check-in location and what happens if your flight is delayed.
Resort to consider: Vinpearl Resort Nha Trang. Check how to get from your room to the park and whether the rate includes round-trip mainland transfers, transport on the island and VinWonders admission.
Bãi Dài, Cam Ranh: a slower resort break
Bãi Dài lies between the airport and downtown Nha Trang. It’s convenient if you want shorter airport rides and days spent swimming, eating and resting at the resort. Book a round-trip car for downtown sights. When comparing resorts, add lunch and dinner for the family and transport for any sightseeing day.
Resort to consider: The Anam Cam Ranh. The beach, gardens and pools suit families who want an unhurried stay with one sightseeing day. Compare breakfast-only and dinner-inclusive rates using the total cost for all four travelers.
Search with the actual ages of both children. Two beds do not guarantee that a room sleeps four. Check occupancy, bed sharing, breakfast and extra-bed charges, then compare one family room with two rooms.
Five things to do in Nha Trang with kids
- Nha Trang Beach and Trầm Hương Tower: The beach and the square outside the tower are free. Allow 30–60 minutes for a walk and leave time for children to play in the sand.
- Po Nagar Cham Towers: Allow 10–20 minutes by car from the central beachfront and 40–60 minutes at the site. The red brick towers look out toward the Cái River. Visit after 8 a.m., cover shoulders and knees, and follow the signs on footwear and photography at this active place of worship.
- Hòn Chồng: The granite headland is a 5–10 minute drive from Po Nagar. Allow 30–45 minutes. If the rocks are wet or waves are high, enjoy the view from a safe spot.
- Nha Trang Oceanography Museum: About 15–25 minutes by car from the central beachfront. The aquariums and specimen displays make a good midday or rainy-day stop. The local listing gives daily hours of 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. Ask on site about international student discounts and bring rain gear for walks between buildings.
- VinWonders Nha Trang: Allow 20–30 minutes by car to the mainland cable car station and about 10 minutes for the crossing, plus ticketing and queues. The operator lists park hours of 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Check the cable car, individual attractions and evening show schedule for your visit.
A three-night Nha Trang family itinerary
- Arrival: Transfer from Cam Ranh Airport to your downtown hotel. If you arrive late, check in and rest.
- Po Nagar, Hòn Chồng and the beach: See the two northern sights in the morning. Keep the afternoon open for a nap, a swim or a walk on the waterfront.
- VinWonders: Start with the attraction your children most want to try. Decide in the afternoon whether everyone has enough energy for the evening show.
- Oceanography Museum and departure: Check out and visit the museum if your flight time allows. Factor in any return to the hotel for bags. For an international flight, use arrival at the airport three hours before departure as a planning benchmark.
If the second day looks clear and the third windy, check your ticket change terms and consider swapping the sightseeing and VinWonders days.
What to eat in Nha Trang
Bún cá: Rice noodles with fish and fish cakes in a fish broth. Try Bún cá Nguyên Loan at 123 Ngô Gia Tự. Budget VND 40,000–70,000 per bowl and check the menu. Bún sứa contains jellyfish and has a different texture. Fish and fish cakes are a good first bowl to share.
Nem nướng: Grilled pork wrapped with vegetables in rice paper. Look for Nem nướng Đặng Văn Quyên at 16A Lãn Ông. Budget VND 60,000–100,000 per portion. Set aside some pork for children first and ask for the dipping sauce separately.
Seafood: Check whether the menu price is per plate, per 100 g or per kilogram. At VND 600,000 per kilogram, 500 g costs VND 300,000 before cooking or service fees. Confirm the total before ordering. “Không cay” means “not spicy” and “Không ớt” means “no chili.” If anyone has a fish or shellfish allergy, check the broth and sauces as well as the toppings. Bottled water and wet wipes may be charged separately.
Three-night Nha Trang budget for a family of four
These estimates cover two adults and two children and exclude flights. Add your own fares, checked bags and seat fees. All amounts are in Vietnamese dong.
| Expense | Budget | Midrange | Resort stay |
|---|---|---|---|
| Three nights | 5,000,000 | 9,000,000 | 17,000,000 |
| Meals | 2,400,000 | 3,800,000 | 6,000,000 |
| Transport | 1,200,000 | 1,800,000 | 3,000,000 |
| Admission and activities | 400,000 | 4,000,000 | 5,000,000 |
| Shopping and extras | 1,800,000 | 2,900,000 | 5,000,000 |
| Total, excluding flights | 10,800,000 | 21,500,000 | 36,000,000 |
The budget plan uses a simple downtown hotel, the beach, Po Nagar and the museum, with Đầm Market or the hotel pool in place of VinWonders. The midrange plan includes a park day. Standard VinWonders tickets are estimated at VND 3,700,000 for two adults and two children at least 100 cm and under 140 cm, or VND 4,200,000 if both children are at least 140 cm. Park meals are in the food budget. The resort plan allows for a larger room and prebooked transfers. Confirm whether children’s breakfast, dinner and extra beds are included before comparing final prices.
Practical tips for families
- Find the nearest marked crossing on your first beach walk. A hotel directly across from the water may still require a detour with a stroller.
- Check map pins carefully. Tháp Bà can refer to both the Cham towers and a hot spring attraction. Vinpearl’s mainland pier, cable car station and island resort are different destinations.
- Follow local beach flags and lifeguard instructions. Switch to the pool or a walk if waves are high.
- Ask about luggage storage and access to showers or the pool after checkout. Keep a bag for wet swimwear and a change of clothes handy.
- Leave one afternoon free. It’s easy to skip Hòn Chồng if everyone is tired after Po Nagar or leave VinWonders before the show.
Nha Trang family travel FAQ
Are three nights enough?
Yes, if your flight times leave a day for sightseeing, a day for VinWonders and part of your departure day free. Four nights give you more time to split between downtown and a resort.
Is downtown or Cam Ranh better with kids?
Choose downtown for walkable dinners and easy nap breaks. Choose Cam Ranh for shorter airport transfers and resort days with meals and swimming in one place.
Can we visit in November?
Yes, if you’re happy with cafés, the museum and hotel downtime. For sea swimming and island tours, compare February to April. Keep the island day flexible in November.
Is the airport bus cheaper for four?
The posted fares put four bus tickets at around VND 200,000, compared with one operator’s VND 300,000 quote for a four-seat taxi. Check whether you’ll need a second ride from the stop and whether the taxi fits your bags.
Is a VinWonders afternoon ticket enough?
It can work if you mainly want the cable car and evening show. The quoted after-4 p.m. rates are VND 700,000 for guests at least 140 cm tall and VND 550,000 for guests from 100 cm to under 140 cm. Start in the morning for the water park, aquarium and rides. Check attraction closing times and the last ride back.
How much cash should we carry?
Keep small bills for the bus, markets and small restaurants, plus enough for your first transfer and meal. Check card acceptance at hotels and larger shops.
